AWS DMS Fleet Advisor is a fully managed capability of AWS Database Migration Service (AWS DMS) that automates migration planning and helps you migrate database and analytics fleets to the cloud at scale with minimal effort. To accelerate migrations, DMS Fleet Advisor automatically inventories and assesses your on-premises database and analytics server fleet and identifies potential migration paths. AWS DMS helps you confidently migrate your databases and analytics systems to AWS with virtually no downtime.
DMS Fleet Advisor discovers and analyzes the same source databases supported on DMS, including Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, MongoDB, and more. DMS Fleet Advisor delivers results in a few hours, instead of weeks or even months, without using third-party tools or hiring migration experts. DMS Fleet Advisor is a free capability of DMS.

Benefits:

1. Build a migration plan in hours instead of weeks.

2. Save on costs associated with migration planning and migrating workloads

3. Identify databases to migrate at scale with minimal effort

Architecture:

Use Cases:

  1. Achieve operationally excellent cloud migrations
  2. Quickly build a proof of concept and begin testing the critical functionality of your applications by automatically inventorying and analyzing your existing database and analytics servers.
  3. Build a business case to modernize your database and analytics workloads with minimal effort with AWS DMS Fleet Advisor.

Steps to create a data collector and download the DMS Collector

  1. From the DMS Studio console, choose Data collectors. The Data collectors page opens.
  2. Choose Create data collector. The Create data collector page opens.

3. In the General configuration section, enter a value for your DMS Collector for Name and for Description. In the Connectivity section, choose Browse S3. Choose the Amazon S3 bucket that you preconfigured from the list that appears.

4. DMS stores your Fleet Advisor inventory metadata in this S3 bucket. Ensure that this S3 bucket is in the same AWS Region where your AWS DMS Fleet Advisor is currently running.

5. From the list of IAM roles, choose the IAM role that you preconfigured from the list that appears. This role grants AWS DMS permissions to access the specified Amazon S3 bucket.

6. Choose Create data collector. The Data collectors page opens. A message appears at the top of the page telling you that the DMS Collector is created and waiting to be downloaded. When creating your first DMS Collector, AWS DMS configures an environment in your Amazon S3 bucket that formats data and stores attributes for use with Fleet Advisor.

7. Choose Download local collector to download your newly created DMS Collector. A message informs you that the download is in progress. After the download has finished, you can access the Installer.zip file from your download page.
